Youth Commission Meeting
March 5, 2015
1. Call to order and welcome – Fernando
Present: Monsignor Flach, Fernando Castillo, Ella York, Sheila Dingrando, James Hopkins, Cathy Newman, Mary Gabby, Laurie Pugh, Christy Holmes, Emily York, Julie Durr, Mike Durr, Rosie Gribble, Donna Evetts, Charlene Scola, Jenny Martin and Donna Bragee

4. Statement of Monsignor Flach
-Monsignor Flach listened to youth commission concerns.
-Monsignor stated that the church is committed to continuing the youth program and that another youth minister would be hired in the future.
- He acknowledged the fact that we need more male PSR teachers in the program.
-He thanked everyone for their service to the youth and the church.
5. Youth Ministry Agenda
A. Ribs –what was sold
Mary Gabby said to the best of her knowledge she thought that approximately $800.00 was made off of the Super Bowl rib sale.
B. Sunday night catechesis
Fernando Castillo and James Hopkins agreed to co-teach the high school boys PSR class for the remainder of this school year.
C. Sunday Concert
No one attended the concert.
A. Elect secretary to take minutes
Donna Bragee will take minutes during the meetings
B. Lock-in with evening adoration – Fri - Sat 20-21
A tentative schedule of youth activities were discussed for youth participation during the lock –in and adoration.
C. DYC – Schedule. Date Sat – Sun Mar 27-28. Obtain hotel rooms Mary may have tentative reservation.
-$50.00 was needed by Feb 20
-Mary Gabby will take care of registration for DYC and will need a check to pay for the attendee’s.
-At this time there are five children that will be attending DYC. Mary
Gabby will be transporting them to the event. They will meet Ella and Emily York who will already be in attendance.
D. World Youth Day – July 25-31, 2016 entertain ideas,
- Chair person
- Travel documents: passports and visas
- Safety tips for Americans
- Emergency contacts
- Touring/site seeing
- Transportation while in Europe: Air travel, Euro-rail, ground transportation
A general discussion and a view of events were discussed. Members were asked to bring back ideas and answers to the above questions for further discussion.
E . Youth to assist/volunteer/service hours
An announcement will be made at PSR to remind the youth of
volunteer and service opportunities available to them through the church.
F. Graduation Breakfast
Everyone agreed to continue the graduation breakfast.
G. Camp Ondessonk
Jenny Martin will be calling Camp Ondessonk to set an April 17th or 18th team building outing, high ropes, low ropes, and or a St. Joseph family day of events.
H. Mission trip
Mission trip options: Informational phone calls will be made to Ferdinand, Ruma and Loreto by Mary Gabby, Ella and Emily York in regards to possible sites for a summer mission trip.
I. Setting up new services to communicate with the youth (Facebook page, text service, etc.)
Julie Durr will be creating a new Facebook page. The administrators of the page will be Julie Durr, Fernando Castillo and Ella York.
The Remind instant messenger site will be recreated as well. Contact information will be collect during PSR.
J. Easter egg hunt
It was in agreement that the Easter egg hunt will continue to take place on the grounds of St. Joseph.
6. Other business – team building – Food for orphans
Fernando Castillo presented a possible team/community building activity called Food for Orphans. This is a worldwide activity that will take place with other Marion churches or other Catholic area churches. The program cost $16,500.00 to create 300 boxes of needed food for orphans. Discussion of cost and resources were made; along with the suggestion of contacting the Catholic Relief Organization to see if they have similar plan that would be less expensive.
7. Next meeting April 9, 2015 at 6:00pm in the Family Life Center
-Donna Bragee will contact the church secretary to change the starting time from 6:30pm to 6:00pm in the bulletin and the church calendar. She will also gather information on possible church related senior gifts.
-Christy Holmes asked if the youth would be attending NCYC in the fall of this year. Everyone thought it was a good idea but the discussion was tabled until further information could be gathered.
-Fernando Castillo presented the group with Fish Fry youth dessert donations of $63.00 and some change.
